Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of that art can be an instrument for activism. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence of an individual juror. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
